SUV hits e-bike in Bed-Stuy, rider critical

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — AN SUV DRIVER collided with a person riding an e-bike in Bedford-Stuyvesant Monday morning, sending them to the hospital in critical condition, according to Transportation Alternatives. The SUV driver was traveling northbound on Bedford Avenue when they hit the bike rider at the intersection of Bedford and Lafayette avenues. TA called this intersection especially deadly, noting last year a pedestrian was killed in the same location by a hit-and-run driver. Lafayette Avenue abruptly expands from one travel lane to two at Classon Avenue, a design that encourages speeding and passing, TA said.

“This is exactly the type of crash and injury we fight to prevent every day,”  Ben Furnas, TA executive director said in a statement. “We can’t wait any longer for protected bike lanes on DeKalb and Lafayette avenues. These streets are deadly.”
