Last month, Rep. Nydia Velázquez decided to retire ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

But the race to succeed Velázquez is quickly taking shape.

Antonio Reynoso was the first candidate to jump into the contest last week.

He is looking to represent New York’s 7th Congressional District, which includes neighborhoods including Long Island City in Queens to Bushwick in Brooklyn.

But the current Brooklyn borough president could potentially face an opponent backed by the growing democratic socialist movement.

Reynoso joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to discuss his campaign for Congress.

“Congresswoman Velázquez has been a mentor to a ton of young, elected progressives in the district. And has really shaped her legacy in a meaningful way. And I consider myself a part of that legacy. And I want to be able to step up and continue the work that she has done in the community, for Puerto Rico, and I think I can step up and do that,” he said.

“But also, just [that] the city of New York is in the right hands and it’s going in the right direction,” Reynoso continued.
