Syracuse, N.Y. – Heavy lake effect snow which hit Central New York Thursday is expected to continue tonight and into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The midday weather service forecasts call for the following snowfalls between now and Friday morning:

Onondaga, Madison counties: 5 to 8 inches.Oswego County: 3 to 5 inchesCayuga County: 3 to 8 inches

The snow is forecast to continue through the weekend in Oswego County.

From Friday night into Saturday, Oswego County can expect 4 to 8 inches in the most persistent lake effect snow areas. The county can expect another 7 inches Saturday and Sunday.

In other parts of Central New York, the weekend forecast calls for the chance of snow showers, according to the weather service.

Travel could be difficult over Thursday afternoon and evening in most of Central New York, according to the weather service.

During lake effect snow, weather can vary heavily with areas of heavy snowfall and minimal visibility found just a few miles away from clear weather conditions.
