An off-duty cop shot a man with a knife in an apparent road rage incident, according to New York State Police.

The shooting occurred Thursday around 3:45 p.m. on Dolsontown Road near the intersection of McVeigh Road in the Town of Wawayanda, police said. A preliminary investigation determined the drivers of a 2020 Volkswagen and a 2021 Toyota pickup truck had a conflict that spanned approximately one mile.

The confrontation escalated when the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as Wallace F. Fisher, 31, of Middletown, N.Y., exited his vehicle and approached the Toyota driver. A verbal altercation at the driver’s side window of the Toyota turned physical as Fisher brandished a knife, according to state troopers.

Police said the driver of the Toyota, identified as off-duty Kingston Police Officer Anthony Simon, 33, discharged his firearm, striking Fisher.

Fisher was initially transported to Garnet Health Medical Center but was ultimately transferred to Westchester Medical Center where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

No arrests have been made, police told the Times Union. The investigation remains ongoing.

Additional details have not been disclosed.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact New York State Police Middletown at 845-344-5300.
