WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Zoo New York has a new animal ambassador.
Thursday night, at our digital news desk, Cassie the Kestral came in to say hello. Small but still mighty, Kestrels are a bird of prey native to parts of New York State. Think, a tiny falcon.
Cassie found her way to the Zoo about a month ago. She’d previously been living at a wildlife rescue center after being hit by a car. Her injuries mean she can’t be released into the wild. So, instead of hunting, she’ll be serving as an animal educator, traveling around the north country alongside zookeepers like Tiff Faull, teaching folks about wildlife.
“She’s a fearsome predator. Now, granted, her size means she’s limited on what she can eat. They’re actually a bird of prey that eats a lot of insects. Small mammals like mice and things like that. At the Zoo, she’s mainly eating small mice,” said Tiff Faull.
Cassie isn’t the only new animal at Zoo New York. Although they were tight-lipped. Zookeepers did reveal that the zoo has another animal ambassador that’ll be revealed soon. What we know now is that he’s a bird.
