STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Junior Michael Abreu led a balanced attack with 17 points and host Monsignor Farrell built a double-digit halftime lead before holding off Monsignor McClancy during a 58-55 CHSAA A division encounter on Sunday in Oakwood.

Abreu didn’t cool off from his red-hot performance during a win over St. Peter’s on Friday as he led the Lions in scoring for the second consecutive game. Once again, the junior’s offensive production came in a variety of ways as he buried three treys, recorded two three-point plays and sank each of his four free throws.

Matt Hanley (15 points), JJ Yates (10 points) and Jack Gomez (10 points) also contributed offensively for Farrell, which won its second straight game to improve to 2-4 overall (1-4 CHSAA).

“It is great to get our first league win against a quality opponent,” said first-year head coach Danny Fisher. ”There is no easy game in this league and learning how to win these close games are important.”

Senior guard Justin Williams poured in a game-high 26 points — including a 10-for-12 performance from the free-throw line — for McClancy.

Leading 15-13 after one period, the Lions turned in a big second quarter that ultimately made a difference in the contest.

Yates scored eight points, including both of his treys, and Abreu and Hanley split 12 points as Farrell outscored the Queens school, 21-11, to take a commanding 36-24 lead at the half.

Gomez, meanwhile, tallied eight points in the third, including a trey and conventional three-point play. Although the Crusaders outscored the Lions 22-18, the hosts still owned a 54-46 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.

McClancy’s second-half run continued in the final period, but thanks to Abreu’s three-point play and 1 of 2 free throws from Braxton Moye, the Lions held off the Crusaders’ late surge.

“I am proud of our guys for hanging tough and withstanding their run and doing enough to win this game,” said Fisher, whose team buried 13 of 17 free-throw attempts for the second consecutive game.

The Crusaders were 14 for 19 from the charity stripe, but missed their only two attempts of the final period.

Farrell owned a 7-2 advantage in made three-pointers.

Two Island varsity games were postponed because of Sunday’s snowy weather, including separate contests involving St. Peter’s and St. Joseph by-the-Sea.

The Eagles were supposed to host Iona Prep. The game has been rescheduled for Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

The Vikings were supposed to trek to Fordham Prep in the Bronx. That contest has yet to be rescheduled.
