1. NYC gets first significant snowfall of the season as bitter cold follows
New York City saw its first significant snowfall of the season Sunday, with several inches accumulating across all five boroughs.
Staten Island recorded the highest totals, topping 6 inches in some neighborhoods, while Central Park measured just under 3 inches. The storm marked the city’s earliest inch-plus snowfall since 2019. Bitter cold followed, with wind chills near zero.
2. Menorah lighting in Midtown honors victims of deadly Hanukkah attack abroad
Hundreds gathered Sunday night at the world’s largest menorah in Midtown Manhattan to mark the first night of Hanukkah, dedicating the ceremony to victims of a deadly antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia.
City leaders condemned the violence and pledged increased security at Jewish events across New York. Police say there are no credible threats locally, though patrols will be stepped up during Hanukkah celebrations.
3. Coney Island Boardwalk to receive $1B for reconstruction project
The city will invest more than $1 billion to fully reconstruct the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk, Mayor Eric Adams announced.
The project includes rebuilding the nearly 3-mile-long walkway, replacing utilities and structural supports, and elevating parts of the boardwalk to improve climate resiliency. The plan also includes 1,500 new housing units, with 25% set aside as affordable, and major upgrades to the Abe Stark Sports Center.
