NEW YORK (WENY) — Schools across New York State have served more than 150 million free meals since the start of the school year, according to state officials.

Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the milestone as part of the state’s Universal School Meals program, which guarantees all public school students access to free breakfast and lunch regardless of household income.

The governor’s office says schools statewide are now serving more than 2.5 million free meals each school day. Officials estimate the program saves families about $165 per child each month in grocery costs, helping ease financial pressure as food prices remain high.

State data also shows participation in school meal programs has increased, with more students taking part in both breakfast and lunch offerings.

Beyond cost savings, officials say free school meals have been linked to improved attendance, stronger classroom behavior, and better academic performance.
