The office of the New York state comptroller, the state’s chief fiscal officer, has significant power.

The office protects taxpayer funds by uncovering waste, fraud, and abuse; manages the state’s pension fund; administers the state retirement system and reviews and audits state contracts.

The office of the state comptroller differs from that of the state budget director because the comptroller provides oversight and is a separately elected office. The budget director works under the governor.

Adem Bunkeddeko is one of three Democrats vying for the position to run against incumbent state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Bunkeddeko is a former nonprofit executive and former House candidate who was born in Queens to Ugandan refugees who fled the country’s civil war.

He spoke with Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter about his priorities for the position of state comptroller.
