The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against the Pentagon over new press rules that require journalists to sign sweeping agreements limiting how they gather information, even beyond Pentagon grounds.

The publication argues the policy violates the First Amendment and gives the Defense Department unchecked power to punish reporting it dislikes.

David McCraw, vice president and deputy general counsel at the New York Times, joined “The Rush Hour” on Wednesday to talk about the legality of these rules, and reflected on journalism under the Trump administration.

McCraw is also an author and co-founder of the Journalism Refugees Educational Fund.
