Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Cardinal Timothy Dolan and appointed Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, to lead the Archdiocese of New York, placing a Chicago-area prelate in charge of one of the most visible Catholic posts in the US.
In a letter to parishioners on Thursday, Dolan announced that Hicks will be installed as the new archbishop on Feb. 6 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. The archdiocese covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and stretches north into the suburbs, serving about 2.5 million Catholics.
