STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — There were seven reported vehicle thefts during the week of Oct. 6 through Oct. 12, according to NYPD data.
Despite the number, the amount of automobile thefts reported in the borough this year has gone down.
Car thefts reported through Oct. 12 dropped 34% (184 vs. 277) when compared to the same period in 2024, according to the NYPD’s latest CompStat figures.
According to the database, 2021 was the last time car thefts on the borough were this low.
The database indicates that seven cars were stolen on Staten Island between Oct. 6 and 12 — the most recent week for which statistics are available.
Here’s a look at those incidents:
On Oct. 6 at 10 a.m., a car theft was reported on Bay and Canal streets in Stapleton.On Oct. 8 at 3 p.m., a car theft occurred at Palmer and Decker avenues in Port Richmond.On Oct. 9 at 4 p.m., a car theft was reported on Hylan Boulevard and Hunter Avenue in Grant City. Later that day, another car theft occurred on Hardy and Prince streets in Stapleton.On Oct. 10 at 11 a.m., a car theft was reported on Elmwood Park Drive and Marsh Avenue in New Springville.On Oct. 11 at 6 a.m., a car theft was reported on East Macon and Abingdon avenues in Great Kills.On Oct. 12 at 10 a.m., a car theft was reported on Fairview Place and Todt Hill Road in Dongan Hills.
Starting at the end of summer 2023, the NYPD enacted a tactical shift aimed at curbing car thefts. In developing an intricate, multi-agency system to gather and analyze intelligence, law enforcement officials were able to drive down the number of grand larceny auto cases, which were surging at the time.
