It’s not an easy commute, but every Friday, Shirley Logan takes two buses and a train to get to the Good+Foundation headquarters in Midtown Manhattan.

Logan has been a volunteer with Good+ for 20 years now. She started volunteering with the nonprofit organization when she worked for Bank of America, and when she retired, she didn’t stop coming.

Good+ helps families with young children get essentials like diapers and clothing. Companies like The Children’s Place and the Gap donate items, and volunteers package them up and distribute them to organizations, which give the donations directly to families in need

“The organization is fantastic, and it’s convenient for me, and it makes me feel good,” she said. “It’s wonderful to help people, and I feel empowered when I’m able to put things together and know that they’re going to the right people that really need it.”

On a recent visit, volunteers were making gift packs for fathers full of hygiene products donated from the company Harry’s.

“Good+ has a model of donating with dignity, meaning, we want our families to feel their best when they receive goods from Good+Foundation,” said Anastasia Marotta, a volunteer and community relations manager at Good+.

It’s hard work, and even though she’s in her 80s, Logan says she doesn’t let the aches and pains stop her.

“If I was thinking about it, I would not be doing it standing up. I would be trying to sit down, but I’m just working with the flow ,” she said.

When she’s not volunteering, she crochets children’s clothing for Good+. And even though she knows she’ll never meet the children who get to wear them, since Good+ distributes donations to organizations that work one-on-one with families, she keeps stitching and volunteering.

“It’s another way for me to give back,” she said.

“There’s more need today than there ever was, so that’s why we need more volunteers, and we need more help,” she added. “And I’m doing my part, doing the best I can.”
