BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — Older New Yorkers living at the Adams Houses in the Bronx say they feel trapped in their apartments after a fire destroyed both elevators inside their 15-story NYCHA building.
For weeks, residents, many elderly or disabled, have asked for help.
90-year-old Elida Mejia, a breast cancer survivor, says she hasn’t left her home in nearly a month. Her son now brings her food and care while she stares out the window, waiting for repairs.
Nearby, 14th-floor resident Irvin Wright climbs the stairs every day with his 15-year-old dog Rio, saying each step is a struggle.
A NYCHA spokesperson sent the following statement:
“Last month, a fire at 700 Westchester Avenue spread to the elevator machine room, destroying critical equipment, including the elevator controller. NYCHA is in the process of fully replacing the necessary elevator equipment to restore service for residents as soon as possible. In the interim, stair-climbers are available to residents in need and can be requested by contacting the Customer Contact Center (CCC) at 718-707-7771.”
