Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Timothy Dolan as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York after Dolan reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 earlier this year. Archbishop Ronald Hicks will succeed him in leading one of the nation’s largest Catholic archdioceses.
Dolan served as archbishop for 16 years, overseeing an archdiocese that spans Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and counties to the north including Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. The archdiocese operates nearly 300 parishes and serves approximately 2.5 million Catholics.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis issued a statement acknowledging the transition and expressing gratitude for Dolan’s tenure.
“I congratulate Cardinal Timothy Dolan as he begins this next chapter after 16 years of faithful service to the Archdiocese of New York,” Malliotakis said. “Over the years, I’ve come to know Cardinal Dolan well. All who have been in his presence know what a positive, joyful, faithful individual he is. My Catholic constituents and I will miss his guidance and good humor, and I am grateful for his leadership and commitment to New Yorkers.”
Malliotakis also welcomed the incoming archbishop, saying she looks forward to working with Hicks as he assumes leadership of the archdiocese.
