BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Senior Chris Albano buried a left-wing jumper just before overtime expired as Susan Wagner upended host Abraham Lincoln via an 81-79 PSAL 4A Brooklyn-Staten Island II division decision on Thursday.

Albano, a three-year varsity player, finished with a career-high 34 points, including three three-pointers and a 7-for-8 performance from the free-throw line. Darin Humes-James (14 points), Charles Gambino (11 points) and Adem Djonbalic (11 points, three treys) also contributed offensively as the Falcons defeated the Railsplitters for the second time in two weeks.

Wagner, meanwhile, won its third straight game to improve to 9-2 overall, including 4-2 in league play.

“A classic game in a classic gym,’’ said second-year SW head coach Danny Lanigan. ”Lincoln has been a thorn in our side since we joined the division. We were 0-4 going into this year and we finally got them at home two weeks ago.

“But winning in their gym is a much taller task,’’ Lanigan added. ”It’s a hostile environment — without a doubt the hardest place to play in our division. Add in that one of their best players (Ja-Keem Gibson) didn’t play in the first game, we knew it was going to be tough. Very tough.

“Thank God we have Chris Albano.’’

Jace Parris finished with a team-high 23 points while Marquise Lloyd (16 points), Bryce Clark (11 points) and Gibson (11 points) chipped in for Lincoln.

The Falcons owned a 70-68 lead with just seconds left in regulation, but Lloyd took a Parris feed on the baseline and buried a shot to force OT.

“We controlled a lot of the fourth,’’ explained Lanigan. ”But every time we looked to secure the win, they made the right cut, the right pass and just fought to get the game to OT.’’

The overtime period was also a seesaw battle, but the Falcons, who received four points apiece from Albano and Gambino in OT, owned a 79-77 lead in the waning seconds.

However, Lloyd sank a pair of freebies with 19 ticks left to set the stage for Albano’s heroics.

The heady guard brought the ball up the left side while being guarded by Lincoln senior Jonathan Medina. Albano hesitated temporarily as soon as he crossed midcourt, then dribbled toward the left wing. Once he crossed the three-point line, he took a step-back jumper that hit nothing but the bottom of the net with just seconds left. Lincoln had no timeouts remaining, and the final seconds ran out, thus giving the Falcons the win.

“Just an absolute tour de force performance form start-to-finish,’’ praised Lanigan of Albano. ”He played (36) minutes and capped off his performance by hitting the game-winning shot with time winding down.’’

Wagner fell behind early in the first half, but they owned a 31-30 lead just before the halftime buzzer when Lloyd nailed a three to give the Railsplitters a two-point advantage at halftime.

Lanigan’s troops found themselves in a 39-31 hole to start the second half, but Djonbalic got hot from the perimeter to help SW take a 52-51 lead into the final quarter.

“One of the tenets of our school is resiliency and that’s how we won the game tonight,’’ concluded Lanigan. ”We just kept battling.’’
