Five people were hurt, three of them firefighters, in a massive fire that broke out at a multifamily home in Brooklyn overnight, authorities say.
Authorities responded to a call about a first-floor fire at the Williamsburg home on Humboldt Street, between Richardson and Herbert streets, around 2 a.m. Within an hour, it had escalated to four alarms.
Emergency responders were seen running around the scene, residents trying to use their shirts, in some cases, to protect their lungs from the smoke. Multiple homes were damaged.
Of the five injuries reported, two were civilians. Both were taken to hospitals with what the FDNY described as “moderate” injuries. The three injured firefighters were transported with minor injuries, officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Red Cross says it is assisting three households affected by the fire.
