Authorities are expected to release new information Monday in connection with the chaotic series of events that triggered an hours-long shelter-in-place, along with an hours-long police standoff in a New Jersey suburb.

Few official details on the circumstances of what happened in Kearny late Saturday into Sunday have been shared. Police initially responded to a report of an injured man near Kearny and Johnston avenues.

There, they found a man with ultimately fatal injuries believed to have been caused by a bow and arrow.

Authorities tracked a person of interest in the man’s death to a home on Kearny Avenue, where the suspect barricaded himself for most of the evening. Heavily armed personnel responded to the scene.

In the middle of the night, as negotiations were ongoing, prosecutors said a fire started at the home where the person was barricaded. The Red Cross said at least four homes had to be evacuated.

“The investigation continued through Sunday afternoon after the fire was extinguished, and the male exited the home armed with knives. He was taken into custody shortly thereafter,” a statement from the prosecutor’s office said.

Neither the victim’s name nor the suspect’s name has been released.

The shelter-in-place advisory was lifted after the man’s apprehension, with law enforcement and emergency crews still expected to maintain a presence at the scene through at least part of the day Monday.
