Fares and tolls are increasing, and how the MTA charges riders is evolving.

On Friday, the MTA unveiled the second of three test gates at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays station.

Staff and police officers are monitoring the rollout.

Riders stopped to look at the new design, and it has New Yorkers sounding off.

“There’s alarms but who’s going to enforce it?” asked Brandon.

There’s no place to swipe on the new model prototypes. Last week, another model was unveiled at Broadway-Lafayette in Lower Manhattan. Both models feature saloon-style doors.

Jay noticed the new gates as she was out doing some last-minute shopping. She has a wish list for the MTA.

“Infrastructure and the MTA are always a struggle. I get what they’re trying to do, but also fix the train,” she said.

Christopher Grief is an accessibility advocate and an everyday transit rider.

“It’s easier, not just for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers, but people with a cart they can go through it much safer,” he said.

A third model will be unveiled in January, 20 locations are being tested in 2026. The companies are paying for the initial process.

The MTA will evaluate the operations. The structures include sensors and screens. Artificial Intelligence will process rider data. Similar designs are in use at other transit agencies.

In the next five years, the MTA plans to install the chosen design at 150 stations. Funding has been included in the capital plan.

Fares and tolls will be changing in 2026.

January brings three percent increases on the NJ Turnpike and Parkway and Port Authority crossings.

LIRR and Metro-North will see an average increase of around 4.5%. New ticket policies also take effect January 4.

Subway and bus fares will increase by 10 cents to $3.

Port Authority tolls increase by three percent.

In the spring, a PATH train ride increases by 25 cents, and a $1 fee is added for for-hire vehicles at airports.

NJ Transit begins regular three percent increases in the summer.
