Shrimp sold at Price Chopper in New York recalled for potential radiation contamination

  • December 27, 2025

New York (WBNG) – More than 80,000 bags of frozen shrimp are being recalled nationwide after reports that they may have been contaminated with the radioactive element cesium-137, according to a recall from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

The recall, issued on Friday, Dec. 19, comes from the company Direct Source Seafood LLC for the brands Market 32 and Waterfront Bistro for bags of frozen raw shrimp imported from Indonesia, the FDA said.

The recall impacts 83,800 bags of shrimp, with the FDA reporting that the shrimp may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with cesium-137.

Cesium-137 is a man-made radioisotope of cesium, and traces of the element are widespread. They can be found in the environment at background levels, and at higher levels in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental conditions.

The recall was placed on the following bags of shrimp:

The FDA is investigating reports of cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products manufactured in Indonesia by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati. The FDA noted in a statement back in October that products that have tested or alerted positive for cesium-137 have not entered the U.S. marketplace, and no illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.

Anyone who has purchased the shrimp is advised not to eat them and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
