Lauren Ann Malone Besignano, 75, of Cincinnati, Ohio, a former Great Kills resident, died on Dec. 21.

Throughout her life, she held many roles, including homemaker and payroll worker for the United States Postal Service and the former St. Vincent’s Medical Center, West Brighton. She also worked for the New York City Department of Transportation Office of Payroll Management for more than 15 years and held positions in the Equal Employment Opportunity Office and as the Director of Administration for Staten Island Ferries, before returning to Payroll as the director.

She attended the Academy of St Dorothy, Sacred Heart, and Saint Joseph Hill before graduating from Wagner College with a bachelor of arts in English in 1972. The following May, she married John Lawrence Besignano, Sr, of Manhattan.

She was an active parishioner at the Church of St. John Neumann, where she served as a Lector and CCD instructor. Read the full obituary on SILive.

Leslie Paul Gertner, 101, a long-time Staten Islander known as the “Mayor of New Dorp,” died on Dec. 19.

Born in Manhattan on Sept. 12, 1924, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radar specialist. Mr. Gertner worked for the A&P company for 50 years, meeting his wife Inez while at the New Dorp store.

They were married from 1951 until her death in 2005. He was an avid card player and active in several local organizations. Read the full obituary on SILive
