Eric Aitken, a 15-year-old student at Crosby High School in Waterbury, lost his life after being shot in the chest Saturday. Another teen was also shot in the arm.

BRONX, N.Y. — The Waterbury community is mourning after a 15-year-old from the city was killed in a New York City shooting Saturday evening.

NYPD officers reportedly responded to shots fired inside a building on Adee Avenue in the Bronx around 6:25 p.m. Another 14-year-old boy was also shot.

Eric Aitken, a student at Crosby High School in Waterbury, was shot in the chest. He was taken by EMS to a hospital, where he later died.

The other teen who was shot was found by officers in front of a building on Laconia Avenue with a wound to his left arm. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday evening, Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski, Jr. issued a statement in response to Aitken’s death.

“On behalf of the entire Waterbury community, I extend my deepest condolences to Eric’s family, loved ones, classmates, teachers and all those who knew and cared for him,” Pernerewski said. “The loss of a young life, especially one filled with promise, is devastating beyond words, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they endure this unimaginable pain.”

The mayor added that no family should ever have to bury a child and no young person should lose their life to gun violence.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgent need to continue working together to address gun violence and to ensure that our children are safe, supported and protected,” Pernerewski said.

He continued to note that the city stands with the NYPD as they continue their investigation and expressed optimism that Aitken’s killer will be found and brought to justice.

“In the days ahead, our school district will work to ensure that counseling and support services are available to students and staff who are grieving,” Pernerewski concluded.

This is a developing story. FOX61 will provide more updates when they become available from law enforcement.
