Halloween is less than two weeks away and for those who are going to be taking a mid-autumn hike, New York State has some fun things to search for. We have thousands of acres of public land to explore and the fall might be the perfect time to do it!
Depending on who you ask, the leaves this fall have been majestic! I have heard from some who say that the colors are not nearly as vibrant as they have been in the past and that might be due to the lack of rain in some areas of the state. I have seen some of the best colors this fall and the leaves are either at , or past their peak around Western New York.
If you look close, there are some really neat pieces of nature around you that are ideal for a “spooky season” hike. New York State Park’s team does a great job of pointing them out!
I try to get the family outdoors as often as I can. We live in a state that offers so many great natural resources and many of them are free! A visit to Niagara Falls or a trip to the Adirondacks are just two examples of things a family can do outdoors that won’t cost more than some gas money and snacks for the road trip.
Halloween Fun In The Woods In New York State
In a recent post on “X”, New York State Parks highlighted some Halloween themed wonders of nature that your family can hunt for before or after you search for than perfect pumpkin.
One of these caught my attention. I don’t know that I have ever really noticed “Dead Man’s Fingers” in our woods. They can be found just about anywhere and according to what I have found, ” These fungi are poisonous. All Xylaria contain amatoxin and phallotoxin, which are two compounds found in some of the world’s most poisonous mushrooms”.
