BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Today will be mostly sunny, windy and warm. Highs will be mainly in the 70s, though a few 80-degree readings can’t be ruled out in New York, especially near the St. Lawrence Valley. Unfortunately, the fire danger will be high, especially during the afternoon and early evening, and especially in Northern New York and the northern half of Vermont. For that reason, a low-end First Alert Weather Day is in effect until 8 PM. The wind will be south 15 to 25 mph, with gusts to 40 mph, especially in Northern New York. While damaging wind isn’t expected, this wind combined with low humidity will cause dangerous fire weather conditions. Any fire that develops can easily get out of control. Thankfully, the risk will end overnight.
Much welcomed rain will move in Sunday night after midnight. This rain will occur in batches on Monday, with some heavy downpours expected. Locally over an inch of rain is possible by evening. It will remain windy with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. The western slopes of the Green Mountains may have gusts to 50 mph during the morning, with a few power outages possible. The rain will taper to showers during the evening, then end overnight.
Tuesday will be dry, then more showers will start to move in overnight. Showers are likely on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be unsettled and cooler. Expect partly sunny skies with scattered light showers. Even some snow showers are possible in the mountains. Highs will be mainly in the low 50s, and lows will be in the 30s to low 40s. This wetter week will put a small dent in the drought, but not a significant one. It will, however, keep the fire danger down.
