Does it taste the same?
That’s what dozens of New Yorkers who lined up in the cold and rain Monday morning were hoping to find out; if the bagels at New Absolute Bagels taste the same as they remembered.
“They’re an instant hit. Best bagels in the city,” said Upper West Side resident Richard Mark.

Locals call the store a “neighborhood institution” and are happy to see it reopen
The cult-favorite UWS bagel spot Absolute Bagels abruptly closed its doors in December of last year, leaving customers crushed. But now, it’s back open with a new name.
“It’s really good people that work there,” said local resident Eve, who did not give her last name. “We were so disappointed when it happened before Christmas.”
According to a Department of Health report from that month, Absolute Bagels was issued 67 violations for evidence of rats and live roaches, among other sanitary violations. But the longtime property broker for the store, Rafe Evans, told NY1 over the phone that the “New Absolute Bagels” owners do not have any connection to the family who ran the original bagel shop for decades, although many of the same employees will be working there. Evans also said the location has been completely renovated, with new equipment, new floors, new walls and ducts and ceilings.
The owner declined to speak to NY1 on camera, but staff handed out free bagels to excited customers all morning long.
“Everybody in the neighborhood loved them, so we’re thrilled they’re honoring the old Absolute. We’re hoping that they are,” said Eve.
“I grew up going to the original Absolute Bagels. Now, I’m bringing my kids here to do the same,” said Upper West Side resident Joe, who did not give his last name.
The store’s soft opening will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., or until the bagels run out.
