DA Gonzalez announced on Wednesday that 2025 was the safest year in Brooklyn’s history.

“Brooklyn’s record-low homicides and gun violence prove that community engagement, fairness, and trust make neighborhoods safer. By listening to residents, holding the most dangerous offenders accountable, and breaking cycles of violence, we are showing that safety comes from partnership, not vilifying our neighbors. I am confident that we can continue this encouraging trend into the new year.”

According to data from the Brooklyn DA’s office, both homicides and shootings homicides have dropped by about 25%.

Shooting incidents and shooting victims have also declined, the DA said.

In addition to murder, shootings, and victims declining for 2025, arrests for retail theft dropped nearly 20%, the largest decline among all boroughs. This trend was observed after an enforcement program targeting repeat offenders at major retailers was implemented.

Brooklyn also saw a little over 8% decrease in burglaries, a reduction of just over 10% in hate crimes, and a slight decline in auto theft, according to data provided to PIX11 news by the DA’s office, obtained through the NYPD’s Compstat report.
