Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that special elections will be held Feb. 3 to fill the state Assembly and Senate seats vacated by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal.

The openings in the 36th Assembly District in Queens and the 47th Senate District in Manhattan follow the departures of the two lawmakers, who assumed their new elected offices on Thursday.

Special elections will be held Feb. 3 to fill vacant seats in Manhattan and Queens

The vacancies follow the elections of Brad Hoylman-Sigal as Manhattan borough president and Zohran Mamdani as New York City mayor

Mamdani has endorsed Diana Moreno to run for his former Assembly seat in Queens

A special election will also be held for a vacant state Senate seat in the Buffalo area

“These state legislators represented their communities with distinction in Albany, and we wish them well in their next chapters,” Hochul said in a statement. “I look forward to working with their successors and working on the issues that matter to New Yorkers.”

The 47th Senate District includes neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen and the Upper West Side, along with part of Central Park. The 36th Assembly District covers much of western and central Astoria, Ditmars, Astoria Heights and northern Long Island City.

Mamdani has already endorsed Diana Moreno, a democratic socialist who immigrated from Ecuador at age 11, in the race for his former seat.

Moreno has worked alongside Mamdani on progressive causes and supports his push for universal child care. She has framed her candidacy as a continuation of his policy agenda.

“As Zohran often reminds us, this is not work that he can do alone,” Moreno said last month. “I will be the unwavering ally he will need in Albany to deliver on his affordability agenda, and to fight back against the rising tide of fascism.”

City Councilmember Erik Bottcher announced last month that he is leaving the race to succeed retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler in Congress and will instead seek to replace Hoylman-Sigal in the 47th Senate District

Hochul also announced a special election will be held the same day to fill the 61st Senate District seat in western New York vacated by former state Sen. Sean Ryan, who was sworn in as mayor of Buffalo on Thursday.
