Happy New Year! Here in New York State, a number of new laws officially went into effect as we rang in 2026. Some of these changes were expected, while others were already on the books but are now being more strictly enforced in the new year. Either way, it’s important for residents to stay informed.

New York State Minimum Wage Increases in 2026

As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2026, New York State’s minimum wage increased once again. Workers earning minimum wage are now making $16 per hour.

This wage is expected to rise again in 2027, with future increases tied to inflationary changes. For employees and employers alike, this adjustment reflects the state’s ongoing effort to address rising costs of living across New York.

Reinforced Gun Laws and Permit Recertification in New York State

As mentioned in previous articles, some existing laws are now being reinforced. For handgun owners in New York State, it’s important to remember that firearm permits and registrations must be recertified every few years.

Gun owners should check the New York State Police website for the most up-to-date information regarding recertification requirements and deadlines. If you are looking to obtain a handgun permit in New York State, be aware that there are strict requirements and a lengthy process. If your goal is to have a permit before the end of the year, it’s best to start as soon as possible.

Dog Ownership Laws in New York State: What Pet Owners Should Know

What about dogs? Rules and regulations for pet owners in New York State can vary widely depending on the county or municipality.

One common issue is failing to pick up after your dog in public spaces. In some areas, fines for not cleaning up after your pet can be substantial, sometimes reaching hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Certain municipalities have even threatened jail time for repeat offenders who refuse to comply.

In Yonkers, for example, the law reads, “it shall be the duty of each dog and animal owner to remove any feces left by his or her dog on any sidewalk, gutter, street or other public area within the City of Yonkers. A violation of § 65-12 shall be a Class III and up to $1,500”.

Picking Up After Your Dog Is Not Optional

Beyond the legal consequences, picking up after your dog is simply the right thing to do. If you own an animal, you are responsible for that animal, plain and simple.

Already this year, and we are only a few days in, I’ve noticed dog waste left behind during walks. This is disrespectful to neighbors, families, and anyone else using public spaces.

In New York City, the law says: “If the agent sees someone not cleaning up after their dog, they will give them a violation. The maximum fine is $250”.

Winter Weather Is No Excuse

Now that winter has arrived in New York State, there is still no excuse for not picking up after your dog. Snow, cold, rain, or ice, pet owners are responsible for their dogs no matter the weather conditions.

Leash Laws and Aggressive Dog Regulations

Leash laws and regulations regarding aggressive dogs also vary by location. Pet owners should always check with their local municipality or county offices to ensure they are complying with all applicable rules and ordinances.

In the City of Buffalo, New York, the leash law also pertains to where you are NOT allowed to bring a dog. “no person shall bring a dog, either leashed or unleashed, to a special event held on municipal property. The owner of the dog or the owner of record shall be held liable for a violation of this subsection”.

A New Dog Means a New Responsibility

If you welcomed a new dog into your family this year, congratulations! There are few things more rewarding than adding a dog to the family, they truly return love tenfold.

Just remember that with that joy comes responsibility. For families with children, owning a dog is also a great opportunity to teach kids about respect, accountability, and caring for others.
