Entering Week 18, the Giants were projected to hold a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft ranging between No. 1 and No. 7 overall, depending on the outcomes of that week’s games. A loss in Week 17 would have positioned them to select either first or second, contingent on the result of the contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders.

Instead, the Giants earned a 34-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, closing the season on a two-game winning streak and consequently dropping in the draft order. Upon conclusion of the regular season, the Giants secured the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, per Tankathon.

Before Week 17, the Giants were projected to hold the No. 1 overall pick had they lost their remaining games. There were hopes that the team could secure the top selection and trade it for a king’s ransom to a quarterback-needy franchise.

Now, with the Giants selecting No. 5 overall, they are likely no longer in a position for a major trade-down. Nevertheless, they remain in a prime position to add another foundational young player in both the first and second rounds.

The Giants have numerous roster needs to address. However, their priorities will likely shift depending on how free agency unfolds at the start of the league year.

While Joe Schoen appears likely to be retained as the Giants’ general manager, he will once again have a high draft selection with which to improve the team in 2026 and beyond.
