What to KnowVenezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is set to make the first court appearance since his stunning capture Monday at noon in a lower Manhattan courtroom.Maduro and his wife, first lady Cilia Flores, have been indicted in the U.S. for alleged narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy and weapons offenses.Since arriving the U.S. on Saturday night, Maduro has been held at the infamous Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where Jeffrey Epstein died and Sean “Diddy” Combs was held for a little more than a year before he was sentenced to over four years in federal prison in October.Protesters gathered Sunday outside the Metropolitan Detention Center to decry U.S. intervention in Venezuela. Meanwhile, in South Florida, Venezuelans celebrated Maduro’s capture by American forces.The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday following a statement from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that he was “deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela,” and that the United States’ actions “constitute a dangerous precedent.”Edmundo González, whom the U.S. and other governments recognized as the winner of Venezuela’s 2024 contested presidential election, referred to himself as “president” of the country in a video on social media Sunday and asked the army to recognize him as commander in chief.Interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s vice president under Maduro, appears to currently be leading the country.
