Essex County woman charged with SNAP fraud, New York State Police say

An Essex County, New York woman has been charged with stealing thousands of dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funds following a monthslong investigation into alleged welfare fraud.New York State Police said they were notified in April by the Essex County Department of Social Services Welfare Fraud Unit about a suspected case involving Jennifer Chappell, 29, of Witherbee.State police investigators later determined that Chappell allegedly falsified multiple SNAP applications by failing to report her employment income. She was then overpaid nearly $8,200 in SNAP funds.Chappell was arrested in November on charges including grand larceny, welfare fraud, and falsifying business records. She was released and is due in Elizabethtown Town Court at a later date.
