Following is a statement by Dennis Poust, executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference:
“What a joy it was to receive the news this morning that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop John S. Bonnici as the Bishop of Rochester, succeeding Bishop Salvatore R. Matano, who has faithfully shepherded the diocese since 2013.
“I have known Bishop Bonnici for many years, going back to his earlier days of priesthood when he served as the director of the Respect Life Office for the Archdiocese of New York and a member of the New York State Catholic Conference’s Public Policy Committee. It’s been my privilege to work with him these last four years in his role as an Auxiliary Bishop of New York. The Holy Father has made an excellent selection. Bishop Bonnici is a wonderful priest and bishop, with a pastor’s heart and a sharp intellect. The Catholic faithful of Rochester will love their new shepherd, I am certain.
“It is also a day to give thanks for the ministry of Bishop Matano. His love for and fidelity to the Church have always inspired me, as has his brilliant mind and gentle nature. He has shepherded the Rochester Diocese through difficult years, but he leaves his successor with a strong and vibrant local Church thanks to his faithful stewardship. As Bishop Matano enters into a well-deserved retirement, I wish him, on behalf of the entire Conference staff, many more years of episcopal and priestly service to God’s people. He has our deepest gratitude.”
