Human bones have been found in an Upstate New York wooded area, according to New York State Police.
Troopers said a property owner on Champlin Road in Sodus, N.Y., called 911 to report skeletal remains discovered Wednesday. A forensic anthropologist conducted a preliminary examination and determined that the remains are human.
Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Identification Unit responded to the scene, with assistance from the State Police Canine Unit and the County Coroner. Additional bones believed to be human were recovered during a days-long excavation of the area, state police said Sunday.
The remains were turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further analysis and identification, police said.
Additional details, including the person’s potential age or cause of death, have not been determined. Police did not say how the owner discovered the bones.
An investigation is ongoing.
Sodus, N.Y., is located in Wayne County near Lake Ontario, about 50 miles northwest of Syracuse and 30 miles east of Rochester.
