New York legislative session opens with budget focus

  • January 8, 2026

ALBANY, N.Y. (WBNG) — The New York State Legislative Session began Wednesday in Albany, with Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate and Assembly preparing to shape the next state budget.

Senator Joseph Griffo said he looks to limit state spending this year. Griffo plans to advocate for policies to address affordability, crime, and economic opportunities.

“Well, I’m hopeful we will see initiatives that will reduce the tax burden, that we will have regulatory reform and relief mandate reform, and relief that way we’ll see new policies that we can consider that we will be advocating,” Griffo said.

State Senator Lea Webb said this session comes with the challenges of navigating the loss of federal funds in both child care and health care, while also tackling issues of affordability.

“We see it on multiple fronts if you are a parent who is looking for work, not having access to affordable childcare is a major burden,” Webb said.

On Thursday, Governor Hochul announced a commitment to deliver universal childcare throughout the state, something Webb has spent years advocating for.

Both parties plan to detail more of their legislative plans after the governor’s State of the State address next week.
