SUNSET PARK/BENSONHURST — THE CITY IS FINING BROOKLYN RESIDENTS FOR FAILING TO USE TRASH BINS THAT THEY NEVER RECEIVED, and City Councilmember Susan Zhuang, D-43, urges the city to halt the penalties.
As of Jan. 3, New York City began issuing fines to any property owner who does not have NYC Bins. Zhuang learned that the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is currently unable to accept new NYC Bin orders due to a vendor issue but failed to communicate this problem to government offices or the public.
After she received multiple complaints, Zhuang’s office learned that DSNY is only fulfilling orders placed previously with no clear delivery timeline. The department continued with a non-compliance fine timetable that was set early in 2024.
Constituents reported being unable to place orders during the grace period because they reached a “not in service” recording for the phone number listed on the DSNY NYC Bin website, confirmed by the Brooklyn Eagle.
The only current way to obtain an NYC Bin is to locate a Home Depot that may carry them in stock, Zhuang’s office said.
