The fall wild turkey hunting season is taking place in New York State. Hunters across the state can kill a bird of either sex and, unlike in the spring, can hunt all day! With cooler temperatures finally arriving, it feels like hunting season here in Western New York.
The crossbow and archery season have gotten plenty of attention this fall and throughout the late summer. New York State has changed it’s policy on crossbows and hunters can now use them during the entire archery season.
The fall turkey season is really fun. Typically, hunters can break up a flock and call them all back in. It is unlike the spring when you hope to find a gobbler who wants to come in to your call. Seeing an entire flock approach your blind or calling spot is truly a thrill.
But for one hunter in New York State, there may never be an experience like the one he had when he tagged out FOR THE FIRST TIME on a massive long beard.
In a report from Outdoor Life, it was noted that Chris Tellone killed a big old bird!- “The 28-pound gobbler sported a 10.5-inch beard and a pair of 1.75-inch spurs, and using the National Wild Turkey Federation’s scoring system, it had a total score of 84.2. This makes it the highest scoring “typical” wild turkey ever killed in New York”.
