As the autumn season progresses, foliage is mostly at near peak to past peak, depending on the region in New York State. According to the I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report, over 90 volunteers across the state make observations and report conditions on a weekly basis.
The three designations are No Change, Just Changing, Mid Point, Near Peak, At Peak and Past Peak. Peak, obviously the best designation is defined as the best overall appearance the foliage taking into account color transition, brilliance and leaf droppage.
Broome County is a part of the Central New York Region, while Tioga County is a part of the Finger Lakes Region. Most of Broome County is at or near peak, but some areas are mid point to near peak, while some areas around Oneonta and Cooperstown are at peak.
Tioga County areas range from just changing to mid point. Elmira, in Chemung County, part of the Finger Lakes Region, was predicted to be at peak over the past weekend.
The color changing map from I LOVE NY updates every Wednesday. You can check out the current map at the I LOVE NY Fall Foliage website.
According to the latest report, peak foliage was expected to make its first significant appearance this past weekend (October 18-20) in the Hudson Valley, Central New York, Capital-Saratoga and Greater Niagara regions, and continuing through the Finger Lakes, Thousand Islands-Seaway, Catskills and Chautauqua-Allegheny regions.
It sure is an exciting time in New York State. One, that at times, we take for granted, but those who venture here as tourists to enjoy the changing scenery, it’s breathtaking.
