EAST FLATBUSH — NYC HEALTH + HOSPITALS/KINGS COUNTY’S Comprehensive Breast Center has adopted a new, high-tech method to detect breast cancer-related lymphedema before visible swelling appears, hospital officials said. A common complication of cancer treatment, lymphedema — swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system — can cause serious damage to the complex network of vessels carrying lymph, vital to the body’s immune system. Lymphedema can also cause physical disfigurement, skin infections and other issues, and can become a lifelong condition if not detected early.
Kings County Hospital Center is using the “ImpediMed SOZO” system, a noninvasive technology measuring the body’s response to a low electric current to identify early fluid changes that can signal the start of lymphedema. The system is based on “bioimpedance spectroscopy” and works by sending a safe current to measure impedance in arms, legs and the whole body, according to ImpediMed.
