MANHATTAN — MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI and First Lady Rama Duwaji formally moved from their Astoria apartment into Gracie Mansion, the city’s official mayoral residence, citing security concerns. The pair planned to spend their first night in the mansion on Monday, Jan. 12, the New York Times reports.

Mamdani said the move will allow him to focus on his affordability agenda, despite the contrast between his populist political brand and the Upper East Side setting.

Occupants of Gracie Mansion are allowed to redecorate the upper floors and make minor changes to the residence, which Mamdani and Duwaji plan to do. Upon moving in, the couple said they feel humbled to occupy the historic home.

According to the New York Times, “a healthy-looking monstera plant, a garbage can and a box labeled ‘bedroom dresser mirror’” were among the items visible in the moving truck.
