1. Jury exonerates 2 Marcy prison guards; convicts 1 of murdering Robert Brooks
Jurors returned mixed verdicts in the death of Robert Brooks on Monday morning, finding two former Marcy prison guards not guilty of all charges, while convicting one of murder and manslaughter.
Employees in two of New York’s largest school districts say they’ve been underpaid or not paid at all for months, creating financial hardship for workers who continue showing up despite the ongoing issues.
3. Mark O’Connell named new bishop of Albany Catholic Diocese
The Diocese said Monday morning that Pope Leo XIV named Bishop Mark O’Connell, auxiliary bishop in the Boston Archdiocese, to succeed Bishop Edward Scharfenberger. O’Connell, 61, was ordained as a priest in 1990, according to the Boston Archdiocese.
4. Amazon cloud outage takes down many online services around the world
Internet users around the world faced widespread disruption early on Monday because of a problem at Amazon’s cloud computing service that took down dozens of major online services, including social media site Snapchat, the Roblox and Fortnite video games and chat app Signal.
5. Nearly 3 weeks in, no consensus on ending government shutdown in sight
Two days after Americans protested Trump administration policies at nationwide “No Kings Day” rallies, congressional Republicans doubled down on their claims that the Democrats are beholden to radical elements of their party. On Day 20 of a government shutdown with no end in sight, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the rallies were about “politics” and “spectacle.”
