Participants gathered at the Enslaved African Burial Ground for a libation ceremony that opened the Juneteenth event. Curator Yolanda Wyns, right, restructured this year’s program to begin at the burial ground before moving into the evening’s musical celebration, describing the ceremony as a “solemn” experience that allowed attendees to reflect on the lives of the enslaved Africans who lived, worked and were buried on the former Van Cortlandt plantation. The ceremony included prayers, drumming and offerings honoring ancestors.
