{"id":100175,"date":"2026-01-14T16:57:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/100175\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T16:57:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T16:57:33","slug":"letitia-james-suing-trump-admin-over-two-halted-offshore-wind-projects-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/100175\/","title":{"rendered":"Letitia James suing Trump admin. over two halted offshore wind projects in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3PCRILLXLJBRTHD274IZEEZRQE\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a pair of lawsuits against the Trump administration Friday for pausing the construction of two offshore wind projects meant to power over a million homes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ICNDGLHQCBAKJF5XI5L5QGPEQI\">The Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind projects had their construction off of Long Island halted \u201cdue to undisclosed \u2018national security\u2019 concerns,\u201d according to a statement released by James. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S6ZXCGI3Z5CK3PQTP6ETF5VIL4\">\u201cNew Yorkers deserve clean, reliable energy, good-paying jobs, and a government that follows the law,\u201d James said. \u201cThese projects were carefully reviewed and already under construction when the federal government pulled the plug without explanation. This reckless decision puts workers, families, and our climate goals at risk, and my office is taking action to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LSH7677QJJG7VJHMR3KWYAUOI4\">Combined, the projects produce over 1,700 megawatts of energy which can power about 10% of New York City and Long Island\u2019s electrical requirements, according to New York State Energy Research and Development Authority President and CEO Doreen M. Harris. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MWL6KU6AOND6NBLU5YPZG36LXE\">Empire Wind, specifically, will be the foremost offshore wind project to provide electricity to New York City. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I6Q3EMZMANCQDFF27YC5X6S3AA\">Despite jumping through over a decade\u2019s worth of hurdles to meet the strict standards required by local, state, and federal governments, the Department of the Interior \u201cimmediately suspended all construction activity for at least 90 days\u201d on Dec. 22. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5SQFN5DAW5EUNJEXQS6O4B63I4\">The goal of the lawsuits is to decree the \u201cthe stop-work orders unlawful and block their enforcement,\u201d according to the statement. <\/p>\n<p>No suit for local delays<img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Arthur Kill Terminal\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/QGXHHKRATRGHXFAJDCU4KPNCWI.png\"  \/>Pictured is a 2019 rendering of the Arthur Kill Terminal site. Saris ruled the Jan. 20, 2025, directive \u201carbitrary and capricious\u201d and \u201ccontrary to law\u201d under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), determining it was a final agency action subject to judicial review.
