A 40-year-old Bronx man is suing the NYPD, accusing an officer of purposely driving into him while he was riding a moped in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
In August of 2023, Delonny Davis was riding a moped in the East Village when he says police in an unmarked car spotted him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Along with suing for monetary damages, the man is suing for accountability and changes in how police officers pursue vehicles

In a statement, an NYPD spokesperson said: “This incident is under review and the disciplinary process is ongoing”<\/p>\n
Davis turned around going the wrong way, and there was a crash. He says police are to blame.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The incident was caught on surveillance video. Lawyers for Davis say the footage shows the driver of the police car turning into Davis\u2019 path, hitting him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Davis survived the crash, but was injured, according to his lawyers. They say he was not wanted for a crime.<\/p>\n
“What we’re seeing in this video, I think we can all agree, is not a reasonable amount of force for somebody whose biggest issue is a traffic violation,” attorney Wyler Stecklow said. “They issued him a desk appearance ticket and let him go home. So that’s how unserious they believed it was.”<\/p>\n
Along with suing for monetary damages, Davis is suing for accountability and changes in how police officers pursue vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the beginning of 2025, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told officers not to pursue cars or dirt bikes unless very serious crimes were committed by the drivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This was in response to several people being killed or injured in police chases between 2022 and 2024. Previously, the department had stepped up chases to arrest alleged criminals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
