STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 A nationwide Verizon Wireless outage is affecting some users trying to call 911, according to an emergency notification Wednesday by New York City officials. <\/p>\n

Verizon was still working to solve the issue, as of 2:15 p.m., according to a statement by the company on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,\u201d the statement read. \u201cOur engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important, reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some users reported seeing \u201cSOS\u201d in the area of their cellphone screen where they would normally see service bars.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, customers with an emergency who are unable to reach a 911 dispatcher are instructed to call with a device from another carrier, use a landline, or go to a police precinct or fire station. <\/p>\n
