An amateur Brooklyn Heights baker has taken home the \u201cfan favorite\u201d prize at a Big Apple baking contest for producing a jaw-dropping \u2014 and mouth watering \u2014 recreation of one of the city\u2019s most iconic old hotels in gingerbread.<\/p>\n

Rosy Teed, an attorney whose hobby is baking, wowed the crowd at the Museum of the City of New York\u2019s event called \u201cGingerbread NYC: The Great Borough Bake Off\u201d for fabricating a ten-story replica of the Hotel Chelsea that comes complete with gelatin-sheet windows, royal icing balconies and iconic signage.<\/p>\n

Teed paid tribute to the historic Hotel Chelsea with a ten-story model, complete with gelatin-sheet windows and royal icing balconies. Tamara Beckwith<\/p>\n

The entry was a clear favorite among visitors and staff, reps for the museum said. It got nearly 1,700 more votes between Nov. 7 and Monday than other gingerbread recreations of New York landmarks, such as the Staten Island Lighthouse, Christopher Street-Stonewall Station, Statue of Liberty<\/a> and Chrysler Building.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the railings \u2014 I love how big it is \u2014 and I think it was an aspirational project,\u201d said Teed, 30, \u201cand I love the history of the Chelsea hotel: it\u2019s an iconic building filled with iconic New York stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 140-year-old Hotel Chelsea has lodged the likes of Mark Twain, Arthur Miller, Patti Smith, Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan, to name just a few celebrity guests. It\u2019s also inspired songs from Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, and is where Nancy Spungen infamously died after allegedly being stabbed by Sex Pistols punk rocker Sid Vicious.<\/p>\n

Vancouver, Canada native Teed recalled making gingerbread houses with her family from a young age, slowly turning the pastime into a full-fledged passion with each holiday season.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy oven caught on fire\u201d one night, she admitted, adding that she had to finish her entry using a toaster oven and her cousin\u2019s kitchen after the FDNY \u201ccondemned\u201d her own oven.<\/p>\n

Teed wound up using 28 standard house recipes\u2019 worth of gingerbread for her Hotel Chelsea tribute, plus countless batches of white royal icing to reinforce the project for its four-month tenure at the uptown museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Hotel Chelsea is not only an architectural landmark, but a symbol of New York\u2019s artistic history,\u201d said Elisabeth Sherman, Robert A. and Elizabeth Rohn Jeffe Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of the City of New York.<\/p>\n

The annual New York-themed gingerbread competition, now in its fourth year, welcomes professional and amateur bakers alike to pay homage to Gotham by celebrating its local treasures under the theme \u201cIconic New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

Museum reps said Gingerbread NYC continues to be a massive crowd pleaser to its locals-oriented crowd \u2014 and November and December were its top-attended months in its 102-year history.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re seeing an increased moment of homegrown New York City pride,\u201d Sherman added: \u201cThere\u2019s this feeling around the city of a recommitment to who we are and what makes this city this city: not just tourism \u2026 but the real grit and everyday life of the average New Yorker.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an experience that one can do at any age that really celebrates the quirkiness and spectacular nature of this vibrant city.\u201d <\/p>\n

Aside from Teed\u2019s triumph, other award winners from the display of 21 entrants include Juliet Galea\u2019s \u201cCawfee and a Bagel\u201d (Most Realistic and Good Enough to Eat); \u201cThe Amazing Race\u201d Season 36 winners Cesar Aldrete & Ricky Rotandi\u2019s \u201cStatue of Liberty\u201d<\/a> (Best Borough Spirit, Manhattan); and Kate Sigrist\u2019s \u201cNewtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant\u201d (Best Overall, Most Unique and Best Borough Spirit, Brooklyn).\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Gingerbread NYC displays include a Statue of Liberty, Governor\u2019s Island and Chrysler Building models, among others. Tamara Beckwith<\/p>\n

Nearly 50 creations were entered to participate in the exhibition, in what museum reps called a record-setting application pool.<\/p>\n

When the show wraps Jan. 19, bakers will be able to take their confections home \u2013 save for the Forest Hills\u2019 Westside Tennis Club and Staten Island Conference House, which will go to their respective tributes for future display. <\/p>\n

The Staten Island Range Lighthouse will be going to the National Museum of Lighthouses \u2014 and Teed\u2019s creation will also be going back to its New York roots.<\/p>\n
