Black Lives Matter activist says plainclothed cop threatened to kill him outside Bronx court during sergeant's murder trial 1\"\/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Hawk Newsome outside of the Erik Duran trial.<\/p>\n<p>Photo by Dean Moses<\/p>\n<p>Black Lives Matter founder Hawk Newsome and several eyewitnesses alleged that a plainclothed officer in the Bronx had threatened to kill the activist outside a <a href=\"http:\/\/amny.com\/bronx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bronx<\/a> court on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The incident took place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/new-york\/bronx\/nypd-on-trial-sergeant-murder-bronx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">outside of the trial of Sergeant Erik Duran,<\/a> who himself was accused of throwing a cooler at a fleeing suspect in 2023. The victim, Eric Duprey, died, and the case prompted a round of protests demanding that Duran be prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>Newsome said he was handing out flyers to raise awareness about the case during the afternoon trial recess when, he claimed, the plainclothed officer approached and then issued a death threat.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn officer threatened my life right across the street as we were going into Starbucks. He said, \u2018When I put in my retirement papers, I\u2019m going to f**king kill you.\u2019 I will not be intimidated,\u201d Newsome said.<\/p>\n<p>The altercation was observed by several eyewitnesses, including a journalist covering the trial who anonymously vouched that the threat was made.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was crazy. He said he was going to come to his house and kill him after his retirement. Hawk was yelling, giving him his address,\u201d the witnesses said. \u2018They were yelling at each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsome was unable to provide the name or badge number of the officer. At this time, amNewYork has not been able to confirm if the person who issued the death threat was a member of the NYPD or a member of another law enforcement agency.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Newsome stated he was going directly to the Bronx District Attorney\u2019s office to file a complaint.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey threatened an activist\u2019s life. I\u2019ve been arrested a lot of times for protesting in peace, but I\u2019ve never been convicted of nothing. All I do is fight for the people, and I don\u2019t deserve to have my life threatened by a member of an organization that has 36,000 members, and they all have guns,\u201d Newsome said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/nyc.gov\/nypd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NYPD<\/a> did not immediately respond for comment.\n<\/p>\n<p>Jan. 14 marked the first day of the Duran trial, which could last several weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hawk Newsome outside of the Erik Duran trial.
