New York City schools will be closed one day next week in observance of a holiday.<\/p>\n
Both public and Catholic school students will enjoy a three-day weekend, as schools are closed on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.<\/p>\n
The federal holiday celebrates the life and achievements of the American civil rights activist and leader. It is held on the third Monday of January each year. It is designated as a national day of service, encouraging Americans to volunteer and give back.<\/p>\n
Classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 20.<\/p>\n
The next time public school students have off is for mid-winter recess in February. Catholic schools will not give time off for a mid-winter recess \u2014 opting instead for a longer spring recess later in the year.<\/p>\n
The public school academic calendar<\/a> includes some two dozen days off between the first day and the last day of classes.<\/p>\n The calendar gives time off every year for religious holidays like Good Friday, Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr, and week-long breaks for winter recess, mid-winter recess and spring recess, which include Christmas and Passover. Diwali has also been added recently as a public school holiday.<\/p>\n The school calendar also allows time off each year for Italian Heritage Day\/Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Juneteenth. Dates for parent-teacher conference days for elementary, middle schools and high schools are also posted in the calendar.<\/p>\n After winter break, public school students will still have plenty of break time left, with time off for mid-winter recess, spring break, and other federal and religious holidays until the last day of classes on Friday, June 26.<\/p>\n
