{"id":101563,"date":"2026-01-15T20:52:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T20:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/101563\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T20:52:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T20:52:22","slug":"new-siuh-program-aims-to-speed-access-to-mental-health-care-for-youth-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/101563\/","title":{"rendered":"New SIUH program aims to speed access to mental health care for youth, teens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MKSAVOS27BDZ5FOV22WOGO43YM\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Northwell Staten Island University Hospital on Thursday officially opened a new program aimed at providing children and adolescents with rapid access to mental health services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JJMMOGA57BCSDHW4HYGBRAD7RY\">The soft opening of the Linkage, Intake, and Navigation for Kids program comes amidst a surging mental health crisis across New York state, as cost, provider shortages and long wait times prevent or delay families from accessing timely mental health care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WXO3IHWBVVDPJIWMP5QMGTIUKE\">LINK serves children and adolescents ages 5 to 17. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SRVQDVA6U5F2RBO4YZWQVWBVOM\">Early care has been shown in studies to reduce the chances of mental health issues in adulthood. LINK is the first program on Staten Island to bring together pediatrics, emergency medicine and behavioral health teams, with the goal of providing immediate care and ensuring every child is connected either to appropriate community-based services or to ongoing care within the pediatric clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HN2R653BW5ARNHME6B25MCWTHE\">Calling youth mental health one of the most pressing health challenges of our time, Meagan Sills, president of SIUH, said the hospital\u2019s goal is to intervene early, stabilize patients and connect families with ongoing care before symptoms escalate into crises. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4DEOBQGPXZG4PAJILQHFQDDGFQ\">\u201cThis helps prevent hospitalizations, school disruptions and longterm consequences of untreated mental health conditions,\u2019&#8217; Sills said during a ribbon cutting ceremony in the SIUH Outpatient Behavioral Health Center, located across the street from the hospital\u2019s main entrance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FAMBYXADYBD7JKNG4QJQFUIHJM\">In addition to staff and administrators from the hospital, the ceremony was attended by Richmond County District Attorney Michael McMahon, Dr. Ginny Mantello, director of health and wellness for the office of Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, and Micheal J. Pardo, representing the office of New York City Councilmember David M. Carr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BWZ5SPQCP5C4PDKLELYJBBFN24\">Located within the outpatient center, the program features seven dedicated clinical rooms designed to support patient- and family-centered care, allowing providers to rotate in and out, so children do not have to be moved during their visit. Care teams comprise a medical assistant, psychiatrist, and social worker. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CVU466QHAVBHFFCKPXNBG2NOXI\">The program is open to the full community, and it supports the Island\u2019s multi-million dollar suicide prevention program, \u201cZero Suicide Model,\u2019&#8217; part of a blueprint devised by the borough president\u2019s office in response to the urgent need for early intervention as pediatric suicide rates doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7K4JIDT6X5A2JM7F6JJB2VUILI\">According to the New York City Department of Health, 48% of teens report experiencing depressive symptoms, and suicide is among the leading causes of death among children ages 10 to 14. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/mh\/state-of-mental-health-new-yorkers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/mh\/state-of-mental-health-new-yorkers.pdf\">the agency\u2019s research<\/a> shows that more than half of all mental disorders in adulthood start in childhood or adolescence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M2NS7HHHCNDO5ACWNWHGS77WU4\">Statewide, youth suicide is among the leading causes of injury-related deaths among children ages 10 to 14, according to the state Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"McMahon speaks at ribbon cutting\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6ONGOBKN7BHK7FUUYD2IYKUS2U.jpeg\"  \/>Richmond County District Attorney Michael McMahon speaks of the dire need for rapid access to mental health care for youth and adolescents on Staten Island. (Advance\/SILive.com | Ann Marie Barron)(Advance\/SILive.com | Ann Marie Barron)Frustrating battle for families<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KDBJNNATGFEVNGV6HQEUAU4VB4\">Families searching for mental health care on Staten Island take on a confusing and frustrating battle, said Dr. Rashi Aggarwal, head of psychiatry and behavioral science at the hospital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UZ4RPZYJZZE7PAQCOCGN2INKIE\">\u201cOn the clinical side, what we see, again and again, is not just families struggling to find care, they\u2019re struggling to navigate care,\u2019&#8217; she said. \u201dNot only are there long waits and fragmented systems, but after finally getting an appointment, your\u2019e told your child needs a different kind of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DX7DKCML3JABFMDZLOGW3PDCAE\">By streamlining access and shortening the time between referral and treatment, the LINK program will close critical gaps in the current behavioral health system, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TYAEZ3YJSBH2ZA3MLZG5T6MIFM\">Dr. John Young, senior vice president for behavioral health at Northwell, said one thing he often wakes up and goes to sleep worrying about is the fact that 18% of our children have seriously considered suicide in the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NQGPJWEIERCWXJE6WSLZTIM43U\">\u201cThat\u2019s true in the country, that\u2019s true in New York and that\u2019s true in Northwell\u2019s geography, and it\u2019s right here on Staten Island,\u2019&#8217; he said, noting that half of the people who need care don\u2019t get it. \u201dWe have real issues of quality, we have real issues of access and we have real issues of fragmentation.\u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YB7SULH3RRHI5N2I4X32R47TTE\">LINK is a powerful, yet simple approach to addressing all of these things, he said, by \u201ctrying to build a cohesive continuum of care for children and adolescents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LUACRV3YY5HBPNXAE5DEHDDN5M\">McMahon said the hospital\u2019s focus on mental health was important to him personally, as his family is affected by mental health issues. \u201cIn our family, mental health is very real,\u2019&#8217; he said. \u201dMy family, like most of the families in our country, our state and our city, (is) affected by mental health issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y6NW37OGPZD4RMS7VMHSKYVTVU\">He also said the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/crime-safety\/2026\/01\/man-damages-altar-in-shocking-rampage-at-mass-at-staten-island-church-pastor-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/crime-safety\/2026\/01\/man-damages-altar-in-shocking-rampage-at-mass-at-staten-island-church-pastor-says.html\">vandalism of a Dongan Hills Catholic Church<\/a> and subsequent injuries to two police officers in attendance highlight an undeniable link between undiagnosed and untreated mental health conditions and crime in our communities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7NCQNUI7BNB57AQ3ZFDCS75I5Q\">He said he was relieved that previously threatened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/06\/staten-island-drug-programs-fear-potential-trump-cuts-6-key-takeaways.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/06\/staten-island-drug-programs-fear-potential-trump-cuts-6-key-takeaways.html\">federal cuts to substance abuse mental health funding across the nation<\/a> had been rescinded, and that he was grateful for the work done with mental health at SIUH every day.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"LINK program at SIUH\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/OZJOT776U5ERRJOBPXYRDMJBFQ.jpg\"  \/>Meagan Sills, president of Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, addresses those gathered Thursday for a ribbon cutting at the hospital&#8217;s new LINK program, which provides children and adolescents with rapid access to mental health care.
