The Big Apple sued the food-delivery company Motoclick on Thursday in an escalation of Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s crackdown on apps<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Motoclick stole directly from its own workers by charging them $10 fees for canceled orders and deducting refunded orders from their pay, the lawsuit filed by the city\u2019s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection<\/a> alleged.<\/p>\n

The app owes workers millions of dollars in stolen pay and damages, according to the filing \u2013 which seeks to sue Motoclick out of existence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an indicator of the new era that we are here in New York City, and that is a new era where it\u2019s not just holding Motoclick to account, but it\u2019s holding any app company to account if they are operating outside of the rules and the laws of New York,\u201d Mamdani said during a news conference announcing the lawsuit.<\/p>\n

The filing comes just days after Mamdani\u2019s administration accused DoorDash and Uber Eats of\u00a0preventing delivery workers<\/a>\u00a0from earning more than $550 million in tips.<\/p>\n

The one-two punch against the delivery apps is part of Mamdani\u2019s promised crackdown on \u201cpredatory\u201d apps that he contends are stealing money from hard-working delivery workers.<\/p>\n

The new Hizzoner has pledged his Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will be more aggressive on behalf of New Yorkers, whether workers or customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be very clear: City Hall does not desire to have an adversarial relationship with any business operating in our city,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cWe cannot tell the story of the city without also telling the story of business.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo those, however, who think they can make a profit while stealing from their workers, while breaking the law, make no mistake. We will have those workers\u2019 backs each and every time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sam Levine, the department\u2019s new commissioner, said \u201cbillion-dollar corporations\u201d should be on notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cUber and Doordash do not make their food, they don\u2019t serve the food, they don\u2019t ride the bikes, they don\u2019t repair the bikes, they don\u2019t deliver the food,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s time that we stand up for the people who actually make deliveries a core part of the city \u2014 that actually make our economy work, and that\u2019s the working people of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n
