{"id":101692,"date":"2026-01-15T22:45:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T22:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/101692\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T22:45:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T22:45:23","slug":"n-y-weather-forecaster-provides-update-on-track-of-nyc-weekend-snow-storm-warns-of-bitter-cold-to-follow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/101692\/","title":{"rendered":"N.Y. weather: Forecaster provides update on track of NYC weekend snow storm, warns of bitter cold to follow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KUYV3COJ6BHGBODXIJVNDVKWDM\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Staten Island residents can expect a light coating of snow this weekend, followed by what could be the coldest temperatures of the winter season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/\">according to AccuWeather.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P3422CDEAVF4PAG7C2OLHQFHTA\">A weather system moving in Friday night is expected to bring snowfall of less than an inch to the borough, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Matt Benz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NEN3JUE73NFG7LMLY3J3JBNPYU\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re looking at now is a new system that will be moving in Friday night and into Saturday,\u201d Benz explained. \u201cThat one could also bring the opportunity for some snow later tomorrow night into the start of Saturday for Staten Island and then switching over to maybe a rain snow mix during the day on Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y45KFTLXTFCL5DI57ZSF2U5C5I\">The transition from snow to a rain-snow mix during the day Saturday will help limit accumulation, though the light coating could still create hazardous travel conditions in some areas, Benz warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V2L2ABSGQ5FEJEGW5M2HBBCEBQ\">\u201cIt\u2019d be less than an inch,\u201d Benz said. \u201cWe\u2019re probably looking at a coating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YL6P4MZ7ZZBO3B5V2INQM63BXQ\">Benz noted that while the storm itself won\u2019t bring significant winds, residents should be prepared for \u201csome slippery travel, especially as you go north of Staten Island into New Jersey, the start of the day on Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VGUAIFKXU5FM3PLDO7YPC3GOGE\">Staten Islanders can also breathe a sigh of relief regarding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/ny-weather-cold-front-will-make-temperatures-plummet-on-staten-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/ny-weather-cold-front-will-make-temperatures-plummet-on-staten-island.html\">previously forecast weekend storm<\/a>. Weather models had earlier indicated the possibility of a more substantial storm system for Sunday, but that outlook has changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VS7FDW55HBCDBNGNL5JM4W3J6Y\">\u201cThere had been some indication with some computer models there could be perhaps a more significant storm for the second half of the weekend,\u201d Benz said. \u201cRight now that doesn\u2019t appear to be on the table anymore. Just with how the weather systems are lining up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5LU5H2FN2RANLDEMBJRN5XVR4E\">Instead, the storm is expected to track far offshore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BII5JGISOZEPVECEPZAXULVHCE\">\u201cThis next storm may just stay well out to sea, which would keep us generally dry. Maybe a couple flurries for the area on Sunday,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Get ready for cold<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DYQMAHFQONGYJFG6NPKDLYOTEE\">However, the absence of a major storm doesn\u2019t mean calm weather ahead. New York City is bracing for what could be the coldest air mass of the season early next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KFATMF7MNVEBDCG3IHEUISZ6C4\">\u201cAs we head into Sunday, the wind will pick up, especially as we head into early next week on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday,\u201d Benz said. \u201cJust because a storm is well offshore doesn\u2019t mean that we won\u2019t see that wind ticking up as we head into early next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LWCTKXMW2ZABRBGWCPHUL7BYQI\">The increasing winds will result in a dramatic drop in temperatures by Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BMIK2WELUFDTLK4IWG4ENX7GOQ\">\u201cThat will signal a much colder air mass moving into the region, especially by Tuesday of next week.
